It can be tricky to know what are typical eating behaviours, and when to seek extra support. Here’s some signs you may need to seek support from a dietitian.
Allergies and medical conditions
- Food allergies or intolerances requiring elimination diets or restrictions, especially multiple allergies
- Nutritional deficiencies
- Chronic constipation or bowel disturbances
- Eating disorders or disordered eating patterns
Fussy eating
- ‘Fussy’ eating that does not improve with time
- Persistent refusal of whole food groups such as vegetables, or meats and protein alternatives
- Limited food range or types of foods accepted
- Reliance on milk after 1 year old, or excessive milk intake (over 500mL/day)
- Low appetite, or regularly skipping meals
Growth concerns
- Poor or faltering growth
- Weight loss, or rapid weight gain
Other reasons
- Mealtimes are a source of stress or anxiety, for the child and/or caregiver
- Children with developmental delays, neurodevelopmental or neurodiverse conditions, or sensory sensitivities, that have feeding difficulties
How to get supports
- Speak to your child’s GP or paediatrician about a referral to your local health districts’ outpatient services
- Use the Dietitians Australia website to find a dietitian near you, no referral needed: www.dietitiansaustralia.org.au
