National Nutrition Week is about shining a light on the challenges, and opportunities, within Australia’s food landscape. From supporting children’s relationships with food to reducing waste, strengthening mental wellbeing, and ensuring equitable access to nutritious food, this week is a call to action for communities, policymakers, and organisations across the country.

Nutrition Week Themes

This year, the following key themes will receive focused attention across the week

  • Positive Food Experiences for Children & Young People
    • Safe, strengths‑based nutrition messaging; enjoyable and inclusive food experiences.
  • Food & Nutrition Security
    • Acknowledging the rising rates of food insecurity across Australia and the need for fair access to nutritious, culturally appropriate food.
  • Mental Wellbeing & Food
    • The relationship between food, mood, mental health, and emotional wellbeing.
  • Environmental Sustainability & Reducing Food Waste
    • Sustainable eating; reducing household and food waste in community settings.

  • Host a cook off, or hold a recipe sharing competition. Check out our recipes for ideas!
  • Check out our factsheets on reducing food waste, or have a go at making your own compost at home.
  • Host a breakfast, morning tea or lunch that celebrates different food cultures.
  • Learn about the relationship between food, mood, mental health, and emotional wellbeing.
  • Play food-themed quizzes and games.
How can ECEC get involved?

  • Learn about how the foods we enjoy are grown, or have a go at growing something together!
  • Hold a recipe sharing competition, or encourage children to bring in a copy of a recipe that is culturally meaningful to them to tell the class about.
  • Host a morning tea or lunch that celebrates different food cultures. Alternatively, go on a Food Safari and explore food through the lens of a different culture!
  • Play food-themed quizzes and games, like Foodie Simon Says or Fruity Chairs.
  • Set up a stand with campaign pictures, recipes and food tastings.
