2018 AGM Highlights Key Achievements, Strategic Planning, a Presentation from Professor Mark Lawrence & the Official Launch of Tryfor5

Held on the 8th of October, Chairman, John Wills reported outstanding yearly results with a reworked strategic plan focusing on four pillars: Be Leaders in Healthy Eating; Build our Capacity and Sustainability; Educate and Empower; Advocate and Influence.

Highlights for Healthy Eating Advisory Service (HEAS) included:
  • Over 1,750 organisations have used HEAS services with an estimated reach of 1,014,049 (17%*) of the Victorian population since 2012.
  • An 26% increase in the number of organisations using HEAS services, making the past year the most successful to date
  • The successful launch of FoodChecker, a free digital tool to assess menus, recipes and individual packaged products against Government policies and guidelines for workplaces, schools and long day care.
  • A refreshed mentorship program launch in 2017 aiming to increase the knowledge, skills and confidence of the workforce in order to support food providers/canteens to implement the Healthy Choices guidelines or School canteens and other school food service policy.
Key Projects for Consultancy Included:
  • Developed an educational program (with funding from Horticultural Innovation) aimed at trainee chefs about the benefits of and how to cook with Australian Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Click here to view more.
  • Supporting Retail Zouki Group outlets to implement the food and drink traffic light policies and kJ labelling requirements
  • Independently reviewed Coca-Cola Amatil drinks againststate / territory and national government guidelines
  • Delivered the HEALing matters program, a healthy eating, active living program providing young people living in residential out-of-home care (and their carers) with information and practical opportunities to improve their health through improved diet and physical activity.

Guest speaker Professor Mark Lawrence presented on the Health Star Rating, asking if it was a help or hindrance. With over 30 years’ experience working as a practitioner and academic in food and nutrition policy at local at national and international levels, Professor Lawrence’s experience and qualifications made for an insightful presentation and robust discussion.

During the presentation, Professor Lawrence acknowledged there are concerns with the system algorithm and improvement is needed, focusing on wholefood rather than the nutrient. Currently, a review is underway, with collaboration from all states.

Tryfor5 was officially launched with an informative presentation by Nutrition Australia’s very first brand ambassador, Marly Spoon co-founder and cookbook author, Olivia Andrews.

The strategic plan for the next three years was outlined with a greater advocacy focus through the Fruit and Vegetable consortium, continued government lobbying for ongoing HEAS funding and potential expansion into South Australia. A new partnership strategy will be developed aimed at growing current partnerships and developing new ones for greater impact. Service efficiencies and creating new products and services will have a high focus, and we will continue to build on our capacity and sustainability in our commitment to the better health of all Australians.
